Crocus

The word crocus usually conjures images of cheerful small flowers emerging from snow and ice as the first harbinger of spring. But there are a few species of the genus Crocus, part of the iris family (Iridaceae), that bloom in the fall and other fall-blooming bulbs that have the word crocus in their common name.

Facebook Friends

Michael R. and I went to public school and have not seen each other for over 55 years.

We reconnected while he was visiting university friends in Beaver Valley.

This is a real friend not a Facebook friend.

Mindfulness

Growing Giant Russian Sunflowers

Recent studies have suggested flowers help reduce stress, and often increase serotonin and dopamine. The evidence became clear as sunflowers were researched, as: The symbolism of the sunflower holds profound meaning. A sunflower seed begins its journey in darkness, mirroring our most hopeless states.

In April I germinate the seeds I harvested last fall.

In May ( hopefully after the last frost) I plant them in my perennial garden

In June I water,water,water

In July I  stake them

In August I restake them ( I use old pool cues)

In September I watch them soar to the sky.

In October I will cut them, hang and dry seeds. I will add them to my bird feed and keep a dozen or so to start the process again next spring.
